Oil Spill Incident In Brunsbüttel Involving Cargo Ship Calima

Feb 10, 2025 09:26

On February 9, 2025, the cargo vessel 'Calima' encountered an oil leak while navigating the Kiel Canal in Brunsbüttel, just before its scheduled eastbound passage. The mishap occurred at approximately 9 a.m. in the small southern lock of the canal, resulting in the ship remaining in the lock for about 3.5 hours as crew members worked diligently to contain the spill. Once the situation was under control, the 'Calima' was safely towed by the tugs 'Sönke' and 'Rairplay XV' to the nearby canal port. After thorough troubleshooting and ensuring all repairs were completed, the vessel was able to resume its journey on February 10 at around 7 a.m. This incident emphasizes the importance of prompt response measures in maritime operations to mitigate environmental risks.

Engine Room Blaze on Crew Vessel Near Heligoland

Nov 15, 2017 18:06

On November 15, 2017, at approximately 8:20 a.m., the crew boat 'World Calima' encountered a significant engine room fire while navigating northwest of Heligoland. Fortunately, the nearby wind farm vessel 'Windea Two' quickly responded by towing the stricken ship to prevent any further incidents involving local installations. At that time, northwesterly winds were blowing at 3-4 Beaufort, complicating efforts to manage the situation. The lifeboat 'Hermann Marwede' arrived on the scene at 9:40 a.m., later supported by a NATO convoy comprising four naval vessels. The mine hunter 'Sulzbach-Rosenberg' assumed command of the ongoing operation. The 'Hermann Marwede' deployed its daughter craft, 'Verena,' successfully evacuating eight technicians from the East Northsea wind farm, who were subsequently taken aboard the crew transfer vessel (CTV). Meanwhile, the five crew members aboard 'World Calima' took prompt action to shut down the engine room and initiate fire suppression measures, filling the engine compartment with CO2 to extinguish the flames. Following these efforts, the 'Hermann Marwede' towed the CTV toward the island's port, accompanied by 'Sulzbach-Rosenberg,' arriving safely around 3 p.m. In a well-coordinated effort, the 'Anneliese Kramer' lifeboat from the DGzRS station in Cuxhaven transported a firefighting unit to Heligoland. Fire response teams coordinated actions with the local volunteer firefighting squad upon the ship's berthing. After managing the incident, 'World Calima' departed from the island's port on November 20 at 7:15 p.m., heading toward Esbjerg. It successfully docked at Isvaerk A/S in the fishing port on November 21 at 10:30 a.m. The vessel was back in operation by January 11, 2018, when it arrived at Heligoland's South Port at 7 p.m. For further details and visual updates, access the German report featuring photos and video at: https://m.seenotretter.de/aktuelles/seenotfaelle/ansicht/news/maschinenraumbrand-auf-windparkschiff-nordwestlich-von-helgoland/ and follow updates on Twitter: https://twitter.com/twitter/statuses/930852959629561857.
