In a strategic move to bolster its capabilities, SAL Heavy Lift has proudly welcomed two Type 116 vessels into its fleet, enhancing its capacity to meet lift requirements of up to 900 metric tons. The newly added ships, MV Calypso and MV Amoenitas, are outfitted with impressive dual cranes, each boasting a lifting capacity of 450 metric tons, and feature the highest ice class classification, making them versatile for various operational environments. This strategic fleet expansion comes in response to the increasing global demand for mid-range heavy lift services, complementing SAL's existing Type 183 and 176 vessels that are meticulously planned for future projects. Even before their inaugural voyages, the anticipation surrounding MV Calypso and MV Amoenitas is palpable, as both vessels have already seen their first trips fully booked. The MV Amoenitas has recently departed from Masan, South Korea, and is en route to the Black Sea port of Mangalia in Romania, transporting a crucial cargo of engines. Notably, during its journey, the vessel made a significant port call in China to load three tugs, each weighing approximately 685 tonnes, which were subsequently discharged in Myanmar. Meanwhile, the MV Calypso has embarked on an ambitious project cargo mission from Thailand, where it loaded a reactor weighing over 500 metric tons, destined for the United States in August. The naming of these vessels carries historical significance; MV Calypso honors the original vessel by the same name that marked SAL's entry into heavy lift operations back in 1984. Similarly, MV Amoenitas pays tribute to the first ship acquired by the Heinrichs family, SAL’s founders, in 1865, which was launched from the renowned Sietas shipyard. These names serve as a homage to Hans Heinrich, who passed away in December 2013, ensuring that the legacy of innovation and service continues through these new additions to the SAL Heavy Lift fleet.
