In a maritime incident that occurred on February 12, 2021, at 3:08 AM, the cargo ship 'Calypso.Gr', which was making its way from Riga to the Panama Canal with a crew of 20, collided with the fishing vessel 'Soetkin-Z18' (IMO: 9222065). This alarming event took place approximately 22.3 miles off Selsey Bill, at coordinates 50 27 25 N, 000 24 51 W. The fishing vessel sustained significant damage with a two-meter gash located three meters above the waterline on its port side, affecting its fishing gear store. Fortunately, the crew was able to make temporary repairs using foam and wooden blocks, and they monitored the situation closely, conducting checks every 30 minutes. Remarkably, no pollution was reported in the aftermath of the collision. Responding swiftly, the Selsey Lifeboat along with the Coastguard helicopter R175 provided necessary assistance at the scene. By 6:20 AM, the fishing crew had successfully retrieved their gear, regaining full propulsion and steering for the 'Soetkin-Z18', allowing the Selsey Lifeboat to be released from duty. The helicopter departed the scene around 5:15 AM. By 1 PM on the same day, the fishing vessel had departed the scene and made its way back to the Zeebrugge European Fish Centre, arriving at 3:50 AM on February 13. In contrast, the 'Calypso.Gr' experienced only minor damages during the collision.
