Cape Tawelaa's Heroic Rescue of Migrants Ends in Tragedy with Child’s Death

Jun 30, 2021 12:05

On June 28, 2021, the cargo vessel 'Cape Tawelaa' bravely intervened to rescue 36 migrants approximately 500 kilometers off the Canary Islands. Upon making the distress call to the Gran Canaria Coast Guard, it was determined that the search and rescue (SAR) vessel 'Guardamar TalĂa' would not arrive until after midnight. In an act of compassion, the freighter took aboard the migrants, including six children and 16 women. Tragically, one individual was found deceased, and there was a critical situation involving a five-year-old child who required urgent medical attention. The freighter altered its course toward Tenerife, coordinating with a SAR helicopter for a medevac. Unfortunately, despite efforts to revive the child, they were unable to stabilize the young patient by the time of transfer. Throughout the night, a total of three individuals were evacuated from the 'Cape Tawelaa' and subsequently transported to Hospital Dr. NegrĂn in Gran Canaria for further medical care.
