Fuel Oil Spill Incident at Punta Pereira Port Terminal in Colonia
On July 2, 2025, a significant fuel oil spill occurred during the unloading operations of the cargo vessel 'Capella' at the Punta Pereira Port Terminal located in Colonia. The swift response of the Colonia Port Authority was instrumental in promptly addressing the situation. Notably, containment barriers had been previously installed as a safety precaution, enabling effective control over the spill. The incident was closely monitored by the Río de la Plata District Chief of Staff (JECRI), ensuring ongoing assessment of the containment efforts. The low temperatures at the time of the spill caused the hydrocarbons to solidify, complicating efforts for mechanical collection typically executed with skimmers. In response, personnel from the Prefecture were deployed to the site to stabilize the area and mitigate any environmental repercussions. Fuel Supply Disruption Caused by Mechanical Issues on Maverick I
On April 16, 2015, the 'Maverick I', an oil tanker carrying much-needed fuel, encountered a mechanical failure while nearing the port of San Andres, located on San Andres Island. The vessel was en route from Cartagena at the time, and the delay sparked concerns among the local community about potential fuel shortages. Following the incident, the tanker was positioned at the outer roads for safety measures. After a period of precautionary assessments, the 'Maverick I' was successfully towed into the port on April 21, where it docked without further incident. The operation to offload the fuel commenced promptly to alleviate the supply concerns. Meanwhile, the vessel was scheduled to undergo necessary repairs during its stay in San Andres.
Engine Troubles Continue for Atagun in Rotterdam
On January 5, 2012, the tanker "Atagun" faced more engine troubles, forcing it to anchor as a "dead ship" in the Caland Canal, near the EECV quay in Europoort. The Rijkswaterstaat's vessel, "RPA 15," was dispatched to provide assistance, closely followed by the tugs "Smit Ebro" and "Smit Cheetah." Although both tugs were able to connect to the distressed tanker, delays arose during the process of raising the anchor, complicating the tow. Eventually, after resolving the difficulties, the "Atagun" was successfully towed to Amazon port, where it was secured at berth no. 8030. This incident followed a previous occurrence on January 4, 2012, when the vessel had previous engine malfunctions that necessitated its tow to Vlaardingen.
