Quick Response to Fire Emergency Aboard Ferry 'VolcĂĄn de TeneguĂa' Near CĂĄdiz

Feb 23, 2020 16:51

On February 22, 2020, at approximately 8:20 PM, the ferry 'VolcĂĄn de TeneguĂa' experienced an onboard fire while en route to CĂĄdiz, having departed from Santa Cruz de Tenerife earlier that day. The alarm was raised after flames were spotted off the coast of Antequera, originating from a malfunctioning IMO 2.1 tank unit. The SAR vessel 'Punta Salinas' quickly rushed to the scene to provide assistance. By 9:00 PM, the dedicated crew successfully extinguished the fire and began cooling down the affected area. At the time of the incident, the ferry was carrying 18 crew members and one passenger, all of whom were unharmed thanks to the effective implementation of safety protocols. The possibility of towing the vessel to Chicharrero was considered, leading to the deployment of the 'Salvamar Tenerife' alongside tugs 'VB Canarias', 'VB Tenerife', and 'VB MuletĂłn'. Given the challenging weather conditions and strong winds, the 'VolcĂĄn de TeneguĂa' was towed and safely docked at the south pier of Tenerife's port at 1:00 AM on February 23.
