The vehicle carrier 'Carmen' has been mandated to exit New Zealand's waters following the alarming discovery of stinkbugs within its cargo. This incident is particularly concerning due to the potential threat these pests pose to New Zealand's distinctive flora and fauna. Ahead of the shipping season, the maritime industry was made aware of the intensified regulations regarding stinkbugs on cargo vessels. Upon arrival in Auckland on the morning of November 27, 2018, with a shipment of vehicles from Europe and the United States, biosecurity officials identified three live brown marbled stinkbugs, alongside 39 deceased specimens and 69 other dead insects. Following these findings, the 'Carmen' set sail from Auckland on November 29 and is now undergoing a comprehensive decontamination process offshore. Once completed, a meticulous inspection will be carried out before the vessel is authorized to offload its cargo.
