Bulk Carrier 'Cassiopeia Ocean' Runs Aground on Paraná River
On August 27, 2019, the 'Cassiopeia Ocean', a bulk carrier laden with 46,437 tonnes of grain, encountered distress at 1 a.m. as it departed from the port of Rosario, Argentina. The vessel became aground in the Paraná River at position 33° 2.69' S 060° 34.33' W, precisely at km mark 407.3 along the right bank, significantly impeding navigation in both upstream and downstream directions. Initial attempts for re-floating the vessel using its own resources proved unsuccessful. By August 28, tugboats 'Ranquel' (IMO: 9688702) and 'Brutus' (MMSI: 701006670) arrived at the site to provide the necessary assistance. However, the 'Cassiopeia Ocean' remained immobile as of August 30. The situation escalated with the addition of tug 'Coopor Estibador II' (IMO: 9769374) on August 31. After a series of challenges, the bulk carrier was finally moored at La Plata anchorage at coordinates 34° 43.90' S 057° 48.66' W on September 2 at 3 a.m. Ultimately, on September 9, the vessel resumed its voyage, setting sail from Arroyo Seco, Argentina, headed for Liverpool, with an estimated arrival set for September 30.
