World's First Electric RoRo-Equipped Car Carriers Set Sail

Nov 15, 2011 07:45

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd (MOL) has successfully launched a new era in environmentally friendly maritime transport with its latest fleet of pure car truck carriers (PCTCs). This innovative line features the groundbreaking Iris Ace, the world's first car carrier equipped entirely with electric cargo handling systems, designed to reduce carbon emissions and enhance operational efficiency. The Iris Ace, capable of transporting 4,000 vehicles, showcases a full suite of electrically-driven access equipment, including a MacGregor stern quarter ramp/door, side ramps, and two movable ramps, all supplied by Cargotec. Delivered earlier this year by Shin Kurushima Toyohashi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., the Iris Ace is joined by two additional 6,400-unit PCTCs, Cattleya Ace and Carnation Ace, both of which are equipped with similar state-of-the-art electric systems. Each ship combines MacGregor's technology with electric winches and actuators, removing the need for hydraulic oil in their operations. This marks a significant advancement in the maritime industry, setting a new standard for sustainable shipping practices.
