CEG Cosmos Faces Setbacks with Water Ingress Issues
The vessel CEG Cosmos has encountered significant challenges due to water ingress at the propeller shaft. This incident necessitated urgent repairs at the Husum Shipyard from July 8 to July 15, 2012. After repairs were completed, the ship continued its journey towards Rotterdam and is now en route to Inverness. Despite thorough investigations, the root cause of the water ingress problem could not be definitively identified during the second dry docking at Husumer Dock- und Reparatur-Gesellschaft. All questionable components were replaced in an attempt to resolve the issue. Notably, the CEG Cosmos experienced similar difficulties earlier in March while navigating near Iceland.
Completion of Repairs Marks New Journey for CEG Cosmos
The cargo vessel CEG Cosmos has successfully completed its repairs and departed from Husum on May 15, 2012, heading to Perth after an extensive three-month drydock period. The vessel encountered propulsion problems just 16 hours into its voyage from Thorshofn, where it was laden with a substantial cargo of 1,000 tons of fish meal destined for Perth. The issue arose from a failure in the stern tube bearings, which led to an overheating drive shaft. Fortunately, the ship managed to reach the small fishing village of Eskifjodar in Iceland. On March 3, the tug Eurosund arrived to assist in towing the distressed cargo ship to the Husumer Dock- und Reparatur GmbH for necessary repairs. Weather conditions caused delays, postponing the intended departure until March 12. Ultimately, on March 20, the tugs Karin and Süderoog succeeded in transporting the disabled vessel into drydock in Husum for its repair work. Following completing the repair tasks, the CEG Cosmos set sail after more than three months of work and was expected to arrive in Perth by March 17.
