Drunken Captain Detained After Risky Voyage on Scot Trader

Sep 29, 2014 18:57

On September 28, 2014, the 'Scot Trader', en route from Varberg, raised alarms as it neared Gothenburg for refueling. Reports from multiple vessels indicated that the ship was occasionally veering onto the wrong side of the navigational fairway. When it finally anchored around 8 p.m., the Swedish Coast Guard intervened, detaining the Estonian captain under suspicion of navigating while intoxicated. A subsequent blood analysis revealed an alarming alcohol concentration of 0.97 mg/l, equating to a staggering 1.94 per thousand. Following his arrest by prosecutors, the ship remained docked in Gothenburg until September 29, when it set sail for Rochester with a new captain aboard, aiming for an estimated arrival on October 2.

Stranded Sailors Endure 131 Days Aboard 'Penafiel' in Marseille

Jan 08, 2013 10:14

A group of six sailors hailing from Russia, Portugal, and the Cape Verde islands have been stranded aboard the cargo ship 'Penafiel' at the Quai aux Charbons in the bustling port of Marseille since August 29, 2012. This predicament arose after the ship's owner, the Portuguese company Naveiro, failed to settle outstanding debts, leading to the vessel's seizure by creditors. To support the stranded crew, the Association Marseillaise des Amis des Marins (AMAM) has stepped in, providing essential items such as a washing machine and prepaid phone cards. The situation is not unique to the 'Penafiel'; three other vessels are also trapped in Marseille's port, including the 'Atlantic Star,' docked since August 6, 2009, with its 90 crew members still aboard but receiving salaries. Additionally, the 'Princess Danae' and 'Athena' have been stuck since late last summer, although their crews have managed to return home.
