Rescue Operation: Mumbles Lifeboat Responds to Water Ingress Incident Near Swansea

Mar 28, 2018 12:49

On the evening of March 27, 2018, the volunteer crew of the Mumbles lifeboat sprang into action to assist the cargo ship 'Celtica Hav' after it encountered trouble off the coast of Swansea Bay. Having just arrived from Liepaja, the vessel found itself aground and taking on water as it entered the channel of the River Neath, beginning to list to its starboard side. In a swift response, the ship's captain implemented emergency procedures, activating all bilge pumps to combat the water ingress. The Mumbles lifeboat launched at approximately 8:30 PM, standing by to ensure safety while a thorough assessment of the vessel’s condition was conducted. At the time, the 'Celtica Hav' was loaded with around 1,000 tons of anthracite coal and contained an additional 20 tons of fuel oil, housing a crew of seven onboard. After an extensive survey, the lifeboat escorted the 'Celtica Hav' back to Swansea docks, where it was successfully berthed at 5:40 AM the following morning. The Mumbles lifeboat completed its mission and returned to station at 6:00 AM. The 'Celtica Hav' resumed its journey, departing Swansea once more on June 6.
