In a striking development within the maritime industry, VEKA Shipyard, located in Lemmer, has showcased its ingenuity by converting a semi-completed standard coaster into a specialized cement carrier, named Cembrook. This innovative project highlights a growing trend in the Netherlands, where numerous unfinished coasters, abandoned due to the downturn in the short-sea shipping sector, are being repurposed for new roles. These vessels have found renewed life as diverse carriers, including those for fish feed in aquaculture and as roll-on-roll-off (RoRo) vessels for transporting wind turbine components. The latest addition to this list, Cembrook, has been custom-built for the German shipping company, Brise Schifffahrt, illustrating how the maritime industry is adapting to meet specific market needs while also maximizing the potential of existing vessels.
