Centaurus Dream Successfully Refloated After Grounding Incident
The Japanese-flagged bulk carrier, Centaurus Dream, successfully regained its buoyancy around December 23, 2017, after two weeks of intensive salvage operations. The vessel was subsequently moored at Cigading Port on December 26. Centaurus Dream, carrying a crew of 22, ran aground in the Sunda Strait on the morning of December 7 while en route from Australia, loaded with a cargo of ore, approaching Ciwandan, Cilegon on western Java's coast. The grounding incident was exacerbated by strong currents, despite the presence of a pilot and support from three tugboats. In a concerted salvage effort, a total of 12 vessels participated in the operation, including both offshore and port tugs, a floating crane, and the barge Financia 62. Lightering operations commenced on December 16, leading to the offloading of approximately 19,000 tons of ore by December 23. Following the successful refloating of the vessel, plans were made to dock Centaurus Dream at KBS Pesco terminal in Cilegon.
