Technical Glitch Grounds DFDS Ferry Services Between Ceuta and Algeciras
DFDS has temporarily halted its ferry operations between Ceuta and Algeciras ownership, following a technical failure with its vessel, the 'Ceuta Jet', on July 22, 2026. The catamaran remained docked at Algeciras throughout the day, resulting in a complete cancellation of 12 scheduled crossings—six departing from each port. The affected departures from Algeciras included services at 7:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., 5:00 p.m., 8:00 p.m., and 11:00 p.m., while services from Ceuta at 9:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., 3:30 p.m., 6:30 p.m., 9:30 p.m., and 12:30 a.m. were also canceled. Fortunately, normal operations resumed on July 23, allowing the 'Ceuta Jet' to get back to service. Throughout this interruption, connections across the Strait remained unaffected as alternative ferry operators continued to provide reliable service. Baleària is offering nine daily sailings in both directions, and Armas Trasmediterránea is maintaining five crossings each day between Algeciras and Ceuta.
Ceuta Jet Sailings Disrupted by Technical Issues
On August 23, 2025, the ferry 'Ceuta Jet,' operated by FRS/DFDS, faced technical difficulties that led to the cancellation of multiple sailings between Ceuta and Algeciras. The planned departure from Ceuta at 6:30 p.m. and its return journey at 8:00 p.m. were among the disrupted services. Earlier in the day, the 3:30 p.m. sailing from Ceuta and the 5:00 p.m. journey from Algeciras were also canceled, leaving many travelers with last-minute changes to their plans. Passengers affected by these cancellations are encouraged to reach out to the customer service team of the ferry company for assistance with rescheduling or receiving refunds.
Dramatic Rescue of Overboard Passenger from Ceuta Jet
In a remarkable display of swift action, a 37-year-old passenger aboard the 'Ceuta Jet' fell overboard on November 23, 2024, at 12:45 p.m. The incident occurred while the vessel was sailing in British Gibraltar Territorial Waters (BGTW). Promptly responding to the emergency, the Environmental Investigation and Protection Unit (EPRU) was conducting a patrol on the m/v 'Osprey' nearby. After receiving an urgent call from the Gibraltar Port Authority’s Vessel Traffic Control Services (VTS), EPRU officers were dispatched to the scene located approximately 1.5 miles off Camp Bay. A coordinated Search and Rescue (SAR) operation ensued, involving both VTS and Spanish authorities. Upon reaching the vicinity, the EPRU officers noted that a nearby oil tanker had deployed an orange smoke signal and two lifebuoys to mark the distress site. The challenging conditions of strong winds and tides hindered visibility, complicating the rescue efforts. However, the VTS worked diligently to guide the EPRU officers to the struggling passenger. Upon arrival, they discovered the man in a critical state, suffering from traumatic injuries incurred during his fall. He was swiftly brought aboard the 'Osprey' for immediate medical assessment. Following this initial assistance, an SAR vessel and an Algeciras pilot vessel arrived on the scene, along with a Royal Gibraltar Police vessel. Once the individual was stabilized, he was transferred to the Algeciras pilot vessel and taken to the El Saladillo area in Algeciras, where an ambulance was on standby to provide further medical care.
Technical Glitch Halts Ceuta Jet's Departure from Ceuta
On February 18, 2020, the FRS shipping line faced an unexpected challenge as the 'Ceuta Jet' was forced to delay its sailing from Ceuta to Algeciras. Scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. departure, the ferry encountered technical issues just as passengers and vehicles were boarding. By 3:35 p.m., the decision was made to disembark everyone safely. Fortunately, after necessary repairs were completed, the 'Ceuta Jet' was able to resume operations at 6:15 p.m. and successfully reached Algeciras by 7:00 p.m.
