The Challenge-Prelude: Crew Feedback and Vessel Data

On March 26, 2018, the United States Coast Guard made the challenging decision to halt the search for a 22-year-old crew member who tragically fell overboard from the vessel 'Challenge Prelude'. The incident occurred approximately 110 miles south of Sand Point, Alaska. Following the report, Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak promptly deployed an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter and C-130 Hercules aircrews, who, in collaboration with the crew aboard the 'Challenge Prelude', conducted an exhaustive search covering 673 square miles over 14 hours. The alert came from the master of the 'Challenge Prelude' at 2:17 p.m. on March 25, who indicated that the seaman had been missing since 1:25 p.m. The crew promptly initiated a general emergency protocol, accounting for all personnel and equipment aboard. Subsequently, the master retraced the vessel's course to the last known sighting of the missing individual, confirming that all lifesaving gear was accounted for during this critical response operation.
