Successful Medical Evacuation Near Port Elizabeth

Mar 08, 2018 09:00

On March 7, 2018, at 7 a.m., the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) crew from Port Elizabeth, alongside an Eastern Cape Government Health EMS paramedic, launched their rescue vessel 'Spirit of Toft' to assist with a medical emergency involving the vessel 'Championship.' This ship was on its journey from Itaquai to Singapore when a 33-year-old Russian crew member experienced complications from a previous upper thigh injury. The NSRI's involvement was initiated after the Transnet National Ports Authority alerted them at 10 p.m. on March 6, indicating that 'Championship' would be approaching the port early the next morning. Upon reaching the location, approximately 8.5 nautical miles off the coast of Port Elizabeth, the NSRI team and EMS paramedic boarded the ship. They discovered the patient in stable condition, yet needing a stretcher for transportation. A high-angle lowering system was configured to safely lower the patient into a Stokes basket stretcher, allowing for a secure transfer onto the rescue craft. The individual was brought to shore without incident and subsequently taken to a local hospital via EMS ambulance for continued medical care.
