Dredger Discovers WWII Explosive in Dover Port
On July 8, 2012, the dredging vessel "David Church" made a startling discovery while working in the waters of Dover Harbour: what is suspected to be an old World War II explosive device. In response to this potentially dangerous find, the Dover Coastguard immediately began coordinating efforts with the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team from Portsmouth as well as the Dover Port Authority. Plans are in place to transport the explosive to a secure, remote location for a safe detonation. The EOD team aims to carry out this operation in a controlled manner during daylight hours to ensure maximum safety for nearby vessels. The unearthed ordnance is approximately one metre long with a diameter of 30 cm, although its fins have deteriorated over time. To ensure public safety, the coastguard will issue broadcasts and warnings to all mariners operating in the vicinity.
