Coast Guard Conducts Long-Distance Medevac from Arctic Flounder Off Virginia Coast
In a remarkable display of coordination and response, the U.S. Coast Guard successfully medevaced a crew member from the 'Arctic Flounder' approximately 400 miles off the Virginia coast on May 8, 2020. Alarmingly, the chief officer aboard the vessel exhibited symptoms indicative of a potential stroke. Promptly, watchstanders at the Coast Guard’s Fifth District command center sprung into action after receiving notification from the tanker. Aircrews from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, North Carolina, which included an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter and an HC-130 Hercules airplane, were dispatched to provide immediate assistance. Given the considerable distance to the vessel, Coast Guard Fifth District officials collaborated with U.S. Fleet Forces Command to execute a strategic refueling. The helicopter landed on the USS 'Arleigh Burke' before it proceeded to the Arctic Flounder for the medevac operation. Following a successful hoist of the ill crew member, the aircrews transported him to Norfolk Sentara General Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia, ensuring he received urgent medical attention.
