On April 14, 2022, at approximately 6:45 a.m., the cargo vessel 'CL Sha He,' which had just arrived in Liverpool from Ghent with a crew of 21, experienced a significant fire in its fourth cargo hold while docked at Canada Dock. The incident prompted an immediate response, with five fire engines dispatched to the scene, along with the tug 'Svitzer Stanlow' to aid in boundary cooling efforts. The vessel, which was transporting an undetermined quantity of scrap metal, required strategic measures to combat the blaze. The firefighting teams' plan included sealing the affected cargo hold and filling it with carbon dioxide (CO2) to extinguish the flames. By noon, the fire was reported to be under control, and boundary cooling procedures were successfully completed by April 15. Throughout the incident, temperature monitoring of the tank tops, holds, and hatch tops was conducted showing readings around 84 degrees Celsius, continuing until temperatures resumed to ambient levels. After a 24-hour period, the cargo holds were scheduled to be opened, and CO2 would be vented, subjected to a 200-metre downwind exclusion zone for half an hour to ensure safety. In compliance with port authority regulations, no cargo would be loaded onto the vessel until the situation was fully resolved and additional CO2 supplies replenished. A fire brigade unit remained on standby, equipped with one engine and crew, as precautionary measures were put in place until the fire was completely extinguished.
