On July 7, 2018, at 11:40 a.m., the SFL Medway encountered significant engine difficulties while navigating approximately 22.5 nautical miles north of Land's End (Position: 050 42.46 N, 005 52.46 W). The vessel, en route from Newport, UK, to Antwerp, was carrying a substantial cargo of 13,323 tonnes of steel coils and had a crew of 19 on board. The ship’s main engine unit No. 5 required repairs, which the crew anticipated would take around eight hours to complete. In a recent incident, the bulk carrier 'SFL Medway' successfully transported two crew members to Bermuda for urgent medical treatment. The evacuation, coordinated by the Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre, involved the disembarkation of one crew member suffering a head injury and another displaying symptoms akin to a fever. The maritime center received a notification on February 21, 2017, regarding the vessel's approach to Bermuda. Following consultations with medical professionals ashore alongside ongoing care onboard, the ship, which was sailing 571 miles northeast of Bermuda after departing Gibraltar on its route to Mobile, Alabama, was instructed to expedite its journey to Bermuda. Once at the location, the pilot vessel 'St. George' facilitated the transfer of the ailing crew members to the island on February 22. They were subsequently transported by ambulance to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, where they could receive the necessary medical attention.
