Working Conditions Aboard the Columbia-River

On November 4, 2023, a significant operation led by the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and the Nigerian Navy resulted in the arrest of 16 stowaways in proximity to the Lagos fairway buoy. Among those apprehended were 15 Nigerians and one individual from Liberia. The operation initiated when a distress signal was transmitted to the Regional Search and Rescue Coordination Centre at NIMASA, prompting an immediate response from the Navy. The Nigerian Navy deployed the vessel 'Karaduwa' to the location of the 'Columbia River', where the stowaways were located. It was during their attempt to evade capture that one of the stowaways sustained a shoulder injury. Following this, they were swiftly transferred to the NIMASA Search and Rescue vessel 'NIMASA Benue' for medical treatment at the Agency’s Search and Rescue Base Clinic. Concerns initially arose that the 'Columbia River' was under threat from armed pirates; however, investigations revealed that the individuals on board were merely intruders aiming to escape Nigeria in search of better opportunities in the United States. The apprehended stowaways are currently in custody and will be handed over to the Nigerian Immigration Service for further processing and investigation, while the Navy is managing the profiling of the remaining individuals.
