Final Accident Report on Almirante Storni Fire Reveals Causes

Jan 20, 2023 10:51

The State Accident Commission has published its conclusive report on the December 4, 2021 fire aboard the 'Almirante Storni', attributing the incident to an electric arc from a severed extension cable. The blaze ignited while the vessel was carrying timber cargo near Gothenburg. Despite efforts to combat the fire, it was not fully extinguished until the ship docked at the Port of Gothenburg on December 11. The National Accident Commission (SHK) finalized the investigation on January 18, 2023, revealing critical findings based on an assessment conducted during the unloading process at Skandiahamnen. The investigation uncovered remnants of an extension cable, likely left behind from the lighting used during loading in Orrskär. Upon departure, this cable had been severed. The SHK determined that the electric arc from this cable was likely the catalyst for the ignition of the timber cargo. The manner in which the timber was packaged contributed to the rapid escalation and spread of the fire. Fortunately, the response to the vessel fire was carried out effectively under challenging conditions, with no injuries reported and no hazardous materials released. However, some damage to the ship occurred during firefighting efforts.
