Medical Emergency Halts Scandlines Sailings on Copenhagen Ferry

Dec 29, 2022 18:51

On December 28, 2022, Scandlines faced an unexpected disruption in service when a medical emergency arose aboard the ferry 'Copenhagen'. This incident resulted in the cancellation of two scheduled sailings, originally slated to depart from Gedser at 3:45 p.m. and from Rostock at 6:00 p.m. After addressing the emergency, the ferry was able to resume its journey, ultimately departing Gedser at 8:20 p.m. UTC. Passengers and crew alike were affected by the delay as safety protocols were prioritized during this incident.

Exciting Retrofit: Rotor Sail Technology to Enhance Ferry Operations

Aug 15, 2019 12:03

Sandlines has forged a partnership with Norsepower to implement the innovative Rotor Sail Solution aboard the ferry 'Copenhagen'. This vessel operates on the busy route connecting Rostock, Germany, and Gedser, Denmark. The Norsepower Rotor Sail is a contemporary adaptation of the traditional Flettner rotor, featuring a spinning cylinder that utilizes the Magnus effect to capture wind energy and propel the ship forward. This groundbreaking solution is recognized as the world's first data-validated and commercially viable auxiliary wind propulsion technology available in the maritime industry. By harnessing favorable wind conditions, the Rotor Sail allows for a reduction in power usage from the electric propulsion thrusters and center propeller, thereby curbing emissions while ensuring the ship maintains its cruising speed and adheres to voyage timetables. The retrofit process is set to kick off in November 2019, with the installation slated for the second quarter of 2020. This upgrade will see the 'Copenhagen' fitted with a substantial Norsepower Rotor Sail unit, measuring an impressive 30 meters in height and 5 meters in diameter. Scandlines aims to achieve a reduction in CO2 emissions by four to five percent on the Rostock-Gedser route, furthering its commitment to sustainable maritime operations.

Scandlines Suspends Gedser to Rostock Ferry Service Amid Storm Grischa

Oct 28, 2017 15:24

On Saturday, Storm Grischa caused disruptions in ferry services across the Baltic Sea, leading Scandlines to temporarily suspend operations on the Gedser to Rostock route. The ferry 'Copenhagen' is currently docked at Gedser port, while its counterpart, the 'Berlin,' is stationed at the Rostock terminal awaiting improvements in weather conditions. Fortunately, Scandlines' Vogelfluglinie ferries, along with services from Kiel and Lübeck, are still running as scheduled despite the inclement weather.
