In a move to accommodate rising traveler demand during the bustling summer season, Estonian ferry operator Praamid has unveiled plans to deploy a third vessel on the critical route linking the mainland port of Virtsu to Kuivastu on Saaremaa Island. This strategic introduction of the REGULA ferry is expected to enhance the travel experience, ensuring that passengers enjoy a seamless journey across the waters. To further bolster service reliability, the chartered MERCANDIA VIII will serve as a backup vessel, providing additional capacity and support during peak travel times. This initiative aims to better serve the increasing number of tourists and local commuters seeking to explore the beautiful landscapes of Saaremaa during the summer months.

On April 8, 2015, the ferry 'Mercandia VIII' made its debut on the Rødby-Puttgarden route to replace the damaged 'Prinsesse Benedikte.' After departing from Helsingborg, the vessel arrived in Rødby at 7 p.m. The Mercandia VIII had previously operated as a supplementary freight ferry on the Helsingør-Helsingborg route. Before fully commencing its service, necessary modifications are required at the ferry terminals in both Rødby and Puttgarden, a process expected to take several days. The Mercandia VIII is scheduled to provide freight services from Tuesday to Friday, ensuring continuity for cargo transport while repairs on the Prinsesse Benedikte are anticipated to wrap up by the end of June.
