Daring Sea Rescue: Sick Sailor Evacuated from Cargo Ship Near Newcastle
On April 11, 2017, a critical medical evacuation took place off the coast of Newcastle as a sick crew member was successfully winched from the 'Corona Brave,' a 230-metre cargo vessel. The 42-year-old sailor experienced a severe kidney issue that necessitated immediate medical attention, prompting the ship's captain to request a helicopter rescue. Due to tumultuous sea conditions, the helicopter was unable to land on the ship, leading to a daring operation in which a doctor and paramedic were lowered onto the deck. Utilizing an air-rescue vest, the medical team safely brought the patient aboard the helicopter. Following the evacuation, the sailor was transported to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle, where he is reported to be in stable condition.
