Ongoing Search for Missing Fisherman Off the Coast of Nova Scotia

Oct 15, 2021 12:00

The quest to locate a missing fisherman continues off the southern coast of Nova Scotia. The 54-year-old man disappeared from the fishing vessel 'Miss Janet' during its voyage from Shelburne to Saulnierville on October 14, 2021, at approximately 4 a.m. The incident occurred around 27 kilometers from Yarmouth, N.S. Initially, four crew members were aboard the vessel on the evening of October 13, but as the night progressed, three crew members retired for sleep, leaving only the captain in the wheelhouse. When one of them awoke around 3:30 a.m., they discovered that the captain was no longer at the helm. After searching the boat in vain, they raised a distress signal to authorities. The Canadian Coast Guard promptly responded, deploying the ship 'Clarks Harbour,' the 'Corporal Teather,' and aerial support from a Cormorant helicopter, Hercules airplane, and a PAL aircraft under military contract. By early afternoon, an additional Coast Guard vessel, CCGS 'Sir William Alexander,' joined the extensive search effort. Although fog hindered aerial visibility, the Coast Guard ships and several commercial vessels continued to scour the waters. The 'Corporal Teather,' being the closest vessel to 'Miss Janet,' boarded the fishing boat to escort it back to shore, successfully docking around 5 a.m. The search operation reflects the ongoing dedication of rescue teams as they pursue all leads in the tragic disappearance.
