Dramatic Rescue Operation at Sea: Bulk Carrier Aids in Saving Crew from Burning Longliner

Jul 12, 2017 09:00

In a remarkable display of maritime cooperation, the bulk carrier "Hampton Bay" played a crucial role in a Search and Rescue (SAR) operation off the coast of South Africa. The incident occurred on July 9, 2017, when the Taiwanese tuna longliner "Hsiang Fuh 6" (IMO: 1234567, 489 gt, CS: BH3320) caught fire approximately six miles away and 460 miles East-North-East of Durban, forcing its 30 crew members to abandon ship by jumping into life rafts. The container vessel "Ever Diadem", traveling from Singapore to Durban, was quick to respond, successfully rescuing 16 castaways. Meanwhile, another responding vessel, the "SBI Antares", rescued the remaining 14 crew members. Both groups were subsequently brought to Durban, where the bulk carrier "Hampton Bay" anchored on July 10, and the "Ever Diadem" was scheduled to arrive on July 12. The South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) coordinated the complex rescue operation, as multiple vessels and organizations came together to assist. At approximately 10:05 a.m., the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) was alerted and dispatched the rescue vessel "Eikos Rescuer II" from Durban with a Netcare 911 rescue paramedic on board. Upon arriving at the scene, NSRI medical personnel immediately assessed the situation, treating an injured Filipino crew member who had sustained severe burns, approximating 40% with second and third-degree injuries. A 63-year-old Chinese survivor also required attention for soft tissue injuries to his knee. In addition, an SA Air Force Oryx helicopter from the 15 Squadron was dispatched, carrying three Netcare 911 paramedics. Upon arrival, two paramedics were lowered onto the longliner to help stabilize the patients, who were then airlifted to a local hospital in Durban: the 29-year-old sailor reported in serious but stable condition and the 63-year-old in a stable condition. To facilitate their recovery, arrangements were made for the repatriation of the surviving sailors, who hailed from the Philippines, Indonesia, Taiwan, and Vietnam. Meanwhile, as of the afternoon of July 11, several vessels remained anchored outside of Durban, awaiting clearance to enter the port. A warning has also been issued regarding the abandoned and unmanned longliner drifting in the Indian Ocean.
