On December 11, 2019, the bulk carrier 'Federal Crimson' made headlines after reportedly colliding with the Ravensbourne wharf while attempting to dock. This vessel, which has stirred controversy for transporting 51,000 tonnes of phosphate rock from the disputed region of Western Sahara, became the center of safety concerns following the incident. As a precautionary measure, the Maritime Union of New Zealand ordered its members to halt work at the site, deeming the wharf unsafe until a thorough inspection could be conducted. The wharf underwent an inspection on December 12 and was confirmed to be structurally sound, allowing workers to resume their duties. During the berthing process, a few steel bracing rods beneath the wharf suffered damage due to the tugboat's push on the vessel; one of the damaged rods was already repaired, while work on the second was scheduled for December 17. The 'Federal Crimson' is anticipated to relocate to the Beach Street wharf on the morning of December 16 prior to its scheduled departure on December 18.
