This innovative upgrade included the addition of a 29-meter midsection at Fincantieri's Palermo shipyard in Sicily, resulting in an impressive overall length of 254 meters and a gross tonnage of 63,000 GT. On December 8, 2018, the 'Cruise Roma' ferry encountered a significant issue with its portside propeller while navigating near Porto Torres. After departing from Civitavecchia at 11 p.m. on December 7, the vessel reached its destination in Porto Torres at 7:20 a.m. During its scheduled journey to Barcelona, just ten minutes after setting sail at 8:40 a.m., the ship reported a malfunction involving a propeller blade. The crew promptly halted operations, pausing one mile offshore for necessary repairs that extended until 5 p.m. Following repairs, the decision was made to return to Civitavecchia instead of proceeding to Barcelona due to inclement weather and the need for more extensive inspections of the ferry. The 390 passengers onboard experienced a long wait, eventually being transferred to another Grimaldi vessel in a 26-hour journey that eventually took them to Barcelona on the morning of December 10. The 'Cruise Roma' resumed its service later that same night, departing from Civitavecchia at 10:30 p.m. for its renewed route to Barcelona.
