Storm-Damaged 'Star Standard' Experiences Container Loss in Bay of Biscay
On March 5, 2014, the cargo vessel 'Star Standard' docked at the port of Antwerp after a tumultuous journey from Santa Maria, Colombia. The ship had departed on February 24 laden with a cargo of bananas, but its voyage took a perilous turn when it confronted a severe storm while navigating the Bay of Biscay, leading to significant operational challenges. During the storm, container racks on the vessel toppled to the starboard side, resulting in the loss of 17 containers overboard. Several additional containers sustained damage and were crushed in the chaos. Before finally reaching port, the 'Star Standard' was required to anchor and wait for a few hours, as per the instructions of the Transport Department, which mandated that the vessel could only proceed to port during daylight hours. This waiting period included the presence of a Belgian sea pilot on board. During its escort to the port, the ship was assisted by the tug 'Fairplay 23'. The 'Star Standard' successfully entered the Boudewin Lock at 6:40 PM and was officially docked by 8:25 PM. Salvage Operation Success: Reefer Container Recovered off Caskets
On February 13, 2014, a significant salvage operation unfolded off the coast of the Caskets when the Maritime Operations Centre Cherbourg dispatched the salvage tug 'Abeille Liberté' (IMO-No.: 9308699) to retrieve a reefer container that had been lost by the vessel 'Star Standard.' The container was reported adrift in the Atlantic Ocean after the 'Star Standard' departed from Portsmouth, England, en route to Santa Marta, Colombia. The reefer container first caught the attention of a merchant ship on February 11, and efforts to locate it escalated when an EC 225 helicopter from the French Navy flew out on February 12, only to be thwarted by adverse weather conditions. However, the same evening, another merchant ship managed to sight the drifting container again. The following morning, February 13, the EC 225 helicopter successfully located the reefer container, which was subsequently tagged for recovery. The tug 'Abeille Liberté' was dispatched and, by the afternoon, had taken the container in tow. By 8:30 p.m. that evening, it reached the Naval Port of Cherbourg, where the container was docked. As dawn broke on February 14, the container was successfully transferred into the Flamand Dock and returned to the operators, Star Reefers. This successful mission highlights the efficiency and coordination of maritime rescue operations in securing lost cargo at sea.
