CSL Niagara Collides with Beauharnois Lock Approach Wall
In the early hours of April 9, 2025, the bulk carrier 'CSL Niagara' encountered an incident while navigating the St. Lawrence Seaway, specifically below the Beauharnois Lock. The vessel, which was on a voyage from Montreal to Superior, Wisconsin, experienced an allision with the lower end of the approach wall, causing a noticeable crack on its port side bow. At the time of the incident, the 'CSL Niagara' was operating in ballast. To address the damage, crew members de-ballasted the vessel to keep the affected area above water and repositioned the ship to allow for the safe passage of other vessels around it. Divers were deployed to assess the situation, but fortunately, there were no injuries reported. The cause of the allision remains undetermined. By the evening of April 9, the 'CSL Niagara' resumed its journey, heading east back to Montreal, where it docked at Vickers Quay at 5 a.m. UTC on April 10.

CSL Niagara Successfully Refloated Near Sandusky, Ohio
In a significant maritime operation, the Coast Guard's Marine Safety Unit Toledo and Station Marblehead, Ohio, in collaboration with the crew of the CSL Niagara and Lloyd’s Register, managed to refloat the grounded vessel on the night of November 20. The successful operation took place near Sandusky, Ohio, thanks to rising water levels and favorable wind conditions that facilitated its release with the help of three tugboats contracted by V. Ships Canada. Following the refloating process, a surveyor from Lloyd’s Register conducted thorough tests on all navigation and propulsion systems, confirming the vessel's hull remained undamaged. Fortunately, no pollution incidents were reported during the process. The Coast Guard continues its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the grounding.
