CSL Welland Embarks on Inaugural Journey as Part of Innovative Trillium Class Fleet

Nov 08, 2014 11:23

Canada Steamship Lines (CSL) has officially launched its cutting-edge bulk carrier, the CSL Welland, on her inaugural voyage from China to Canada. This journey marks a significant milestone as the latest addition to CSL’s advanced Trillium Class fleet, which operates on the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence Seaway. Carrying a deadweight of 36,100 tonnes, this Seawaymax gearless bulker set off for Montreal from the Yangfan shipyard located on Zhoushan Island, China. Spanning an estimated 50 to 60 days, CSL Welland's route will traverse the East China Sea and the Pacific Ocean, navigate through the Panama Canal, and ascend the east coast of North America. At the helm of CSL Welland are Captain Andriy Bondarenko and Chief Engineer Nicolas Lavoie. Notably, Captain Bondarenko had previously commanded the Trillium Class self-unloader Baie Comeau during its own maiden voyage from China to Canadian waters last year. Excitement surrounds the upcoming delivery of CSL Welland's sister ship, CSL St-Laurent, which is expected to join the fleet in the weeks ahead. This addition will serve to complete CSL’s ambitious fleet renewal initiative, originally launched in 2010. The newbuilding program has already granted the world four new Trillium Class self-unloading Lakers, namely Baie St. Paul, Baie Comeau, Thunder Bay, and Whitefish Bay. Additionally, the program led to the creation of three Panamax self-unloaders, which include Rt. Hon. Paul E. Martin, CSL Tecumseh, and CSL Tacoma, all delivered in 2012 and 2013. With the CSL Welland’s maiden voyage, CSL continues to reinforce its commitment to modernizing its fleet and enhancing shipping operations across the Great Lakes region.
