Engine Troubles for 'Curia' After Unfit Fuel Incident
The vessel 'Curia' has encountered significant engine issues stemming from the use of unsuitable fuel, which has led to its current docking at the detached jetty in Algeciras since March 30, 2020, at 2:30 p.m. The ship had recently departed from Port Arthur, where it took on Very Low Sulfur Fuel Oil (VLSFO) on February 29. Unfortunately, this fuel proved incompatible with the ship's engines, resulting in considerable damage. Following the incident, the operator promptly notified the charterers, and the Fuel Damage Dispute (FDD) has been initiated. In Gibraltar, a Protection and Indemnity (P&I) surveyor assessed the situation alongside the charterer's surveyor, and Class NK was also present to evaluate the damage. Upon shifting to Algeciras, it was discovered that all piston rings were broken in the engine's cylinders, with the exception of cylinder number one, which had undergone overhaul prior to the vessel's arrival. Spare parts, particularly piston rings, have been a challenge to procure, with most suppliers located in Japan. The COVID-19 pandemic has further extended delivery times, with expectations for parts to arrive by April 6. Once repairs are complete, 'Curia' is slated to continue its journey, with Kandla listed as the next port of call, where it is scheduled to dock on April 30.
