On August 30, 2012, the cargo ship 'Da Qing Xia,' while on its journey from Maputo to Singapore, successfully rescued a lone survivor from a tragedy involving a refugee boat that sank off the coast of Indonesia. The vessel was part of a coordinated search and rescue (SAR) operation executed by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) west of Java. Following medical assessments indicating low chances of further survivability, the operation was concluded on August 31. In total, four merchant ships, along with HMAS 'Maitland,' played critical roles in the rescue, retrieving a total of 55 survivors from the water. Among the rescued were three individuals sustaining injuries, all of whom were subsequently transported to Merak, Indonesia, for essential medical care. A single body was also recovered during the SAR efforts. The HMAS 'Maitland' was instrumental in rescuing 34 survivors, while 'APL Bahrain' saved 15 and 'AS Carelia' assisted with four. Additional vessels contributing to the operation included 'Chemroute,' 'Forever South West,' 'Voyage Explorer,' 'Frontier Coronet,' 'World Swan,' and 'Pelafigue Tide.' This incident underscores the dangers faced by refugees at sea and the collaborative efforts of maritime authorities and ships in rescue operations.
