Devastating Storm Hits Durban, Grounding Multiple Vessels
A severe storm swept through Durban on October 10, 2017, starting at approximately 9 a.m., unleashing gale-force winds reaching up to 90 km/h. This extreme weather led to the container ship 'SM New York' running aground shortly after it unmoored from the port. The situation was exacerbated as the storm winds also impacted other vessels attempting to depart; both 'MSC Ines' and 'MSC Susanna' faced fierce gusts that hindered their movements. The 'MSC Ines' subsequently ran aground, becoming wedged perpendicular to the access channel and obstructing port navigation. By 5 p.m., the 'MSC Ines' was successfully towed to the Coal Terminal by the tugs 'Lotheni' (MMSI: 601135800), 'Siyakhula' (IMO: 9501409), and 'Umbilo' (MMSI: 601124000). Meanwhile, the 'MSC Susanna' was guided back to the Ro-Ro and MPT Terminal at 1:15 p.m. by four tugboats. In addition, the tanker 'Bow Triumph' also ran aground after breaking free from its moorings, and the vessel 'Maritime Newanda' broke loose at Maydon Wharf, prompting an immediate alert to the Port Authority and a response from pilots and tugs to secure it alongside the quay. The Port of Durban suspended all vessel movements due to the poor weather conditions, which also affected operations at the Port of Richards Bay. Transnet’s marine services team was actively involved in addressing several emergencies caused by the storm. Tragically, a 40-foot container was blown over and landed on a car near the Durban port, resulting in the death of one man at the scene. A second individual, around 30 years old, was trapped inside the vehicle but managed to escape with minor injuries; he was subsequently transported to the hospital for further examination. Another person, believed to be in his forties, suffered severe injuries and succumbed to those injuries at the site. In addition to damage to transport, several heavy stacked containers throughout the port were toppled by the strong winds. The small craft harbour and the Point Yacht Club (PYC) saw yachts and boats break free from their moorings. Rescue crews from NSRI Durban were deployed to the PYC to assist in securing the vessels adrift within the port.
