Gibraltar Inquest Follows Tragic Explosion Aboard Bulk Carrier Tamar

May 03, 2017 20:56

Gibraltar is set to conduct an inquest into the tragic deaths of two Filipino crew members aboard the bulk carrier 'Tamar'. They lost their lives due to an explosion that occurred while the ship was navigating towards Gibraltar. The bodies of the seafarers were disembarked on May 3, and post-mortem examinations are anticipated to take place later this week. Local police are actively carrying out interviews and investigations on behalf of Gibraltarโ€™s Coroner. The vessel, which is registered under the Marshall Islands flag, has already undergone an investigation, concluding that the incident was accidental in nature. The explosion transpired in international waters along the Atlantic route from Baltimore to Gibraltar, with the Tamar arriving in Gibraltar on the evening of May 1. Tragically, two additional crew members who sustained severe injuries in the explosion were airlifted by Portuguese maritime rescue teams and are currently receiving medical treatment in Lisbon. Reports indicate that the explosion took place in the vessel's fore castle, reportedly caused by a dangerous accumulation of gases.

Medevac Operations for Injured Crew Members Following Tamar Explosion

Apr 26, 2017 20:25

In a dramatic rescue operation on April 27, 2023, at around 4:30 a.m., two surviving crew members from the ill-fated vessel 'Tamar' were successfully medevaced by an aircrew from the Portuguese Coast Guard. They were assisted by pararescuers from the New York Air National Guard's 106th Rescue Wing to ensure they received urgent medical attention. The aircrew landed on Terceira Island at approximately 7 a.m., where a Portuguese Air Force jet and a medical team awaited the injured for immediate transport to Lisbon, Portugal. The call for help came in response to an explosion on board the 'Tamar', which tragically resulted in the death of another crew member reported by the ship's captain at around 7:45 p.m. on April 24. Following the report, the pararescuers, who had deployed from their HC-130 aircraft, arrived on the 'Tamar' by 9:30 p.m. with essential life-saving equipment, remaining on the scene until higher medical authorities took control of the situation. Prior to the explosion, a port check had identified deficiencies concerning fire safety on the vessel. An inspection conducted on March 15 in Spain revealed six safety issues, including two critical faults associated with fire safety and propulsion, particularly in relation to the ship's auxiliary machinery. The investigation into the incident and safety protocols continues as authorities work to ensure the safety of maritime operations.
