In response to a serious accident involving a lifting system on the 'Deepsea Atlantic', the offshore drilling company Odfjell has taken significant steps to improve safety measures. This incident, which occurred on April 18, 2026, while operating in the Rosebank field about 80 miles northwest of Shetland, prompted scrutiny from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). The HSE determined that Odfjell failed to ensure that the lifting and lowering mechanisms in the drilling derrick were equipped with properly functioning failsafes. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported and no environmental damage incurred; however, the incident resulted in the loss of a blowout prevention valve and approximately 400 meters of riser pipework to the seabed. The HSE has issued an improvement notice citing two violations of the 1974 Health and Safety at Work Act and two additional breaches regarding equipment safety regulations. They emphasized that the incident posed a noteworthy risk of harm due to falling debris in various areas aboard the rig, raising alarms about the safety protocols in place for personnel on the 'Deepsea Atlantic'.

In a serious incident on January 4, 2017, a fire erupted early in the morning on the Deepsea Atlantic, an oil rig operated by Odfjell Drilling and working for Statoil at the Johan Sverdrup field, located approximately 140 kilometers west of Stavanger. The alarming event occurred just before 6 a.m., when flames were detected in the service loop of the rig's derrick. The crew promptly assembled in accordance with emergency protocols to ensure safety. Although the fire was initially subdued, it re-ignited, prompting a swift response from the crew. Fortunately, the situation was brought under control within about an hour. At the time of the fire, the rig was not engaged in drilling activities.
