Recovery of Lost Lifeboat from West Mira Drilling Rig
In an impressive recovery operation, the lifeboat from the newly commissioned drilling rig 'West Mira' was successfully retrieved following its loss due to a significant wave incident over a week ago. The lifeboat was located approximately 60 nautical miles west of Røst on the night of January 25, retrieved by a Russian oil tanker. The Norwegian Coast Guard then took custody of the lifeboat and towed it to Svolvær for detailed examination. The West Mira, part of John Fredriksen's Northern Ocean fleet, was deployed for operations with Wintershall DEA at the Halten Bank in the Norwegian Sea when the lifeboat was lost, approximately 319 kilometers from the recovery site. An investigation has been launched to discover the reasons behind this unusual incident, following unsuccessful search efforts by Solstad Offshore's anchor handling vessel 'Normand Prosper'.
Lifeboat Lost During West Mira Incident in Norwegian Sea
On January 12, 2020, in an unfortunate maritime incident, the drilling rig 'West Mira' experienced a significant wave strike at coordinates 64° 56.27' N 006° 46.53' E. This wave impacted the rig just below one of its lifeboat stations, resulting in the unanticipated release of a lifeboat into the Norwegian Sea. As investigations were undertaken, the Solstad AHTS vessel 'Normand Prosper' began a search operation for the missing lifeboat. The search strategy relied upon drift analysis conducted by the Norwegian National Rescue Center. At the time of the incident, all activities aboard the 'West Mira' had been suspended due to adverse weather conditions. However, it is important to note that there was sufficient lifeboat capacity for all 120 personnel on board the rig. In response to the situation, the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) based in southern Norway, alongside the Norwegian Coastal Administration, issued navigation alerts to vessels operating in the vicinity, warning of the presence of a lifeboat adrift in the sea. The 'West Mira' had commenced its two-year drilling campaign for Wintershall Dea, focusing its operations on the Halten Bank in the Norwegian Sea. This campaign is slated to involve drilling at least 12 wells, and upon completing work at the Bergknapp well, the rig is scheduled to shift operations to the Maria field to drill an additional two wells.
Wintershall Secures Rig Contract for Nova Field Development
Wintershall Norge AS has announced a significant milestone in its Nova field development by awarding a rig contract to Seadrill Norway Operations Ltd. The contract entails the operation of the West Mira drilling rig, which will be managed by Northern Drilling. In an effort to streamline its operations, Wintershall has also established a long-term framework agreement with Seadrill to accommodate future rig requirements. The West Mira rig is set to commence drilling activities on the Nova field, previously known as Skarfjell, with plans to drill six subsea wells in the first half of 2020. Additionally, Wintershall holds options to utilize the rig for up to ten more wells across its various operated assets or for exploration endeavors. Hugo Dijkgraaf, Managing Director of Wintershall Norge, expressed enthusiasm regarding the project, stating, "This is another major milestone for the Nova project. With the procurement of this modern rig, we now have in place one of the final pieces of the puzzle that will allow us to build this field and deliver first oil from Nova in 2021." The West Mira is a state-of-the-art sixth-generation drilling rig, built to operate efficiently under challenging weather conditions, marking an important advancement in resource extraction technology.
