On May 5, 2018, a dramatic rescue took place in the Atlantic Ocean when the bulk carrier 'Desert Spring' came to the aid of three mariners aboard the Swedish-flagged sailing vessel 'Othilia'. The incident unfolded approximately 460 miles northeast of Puerto Rico when the Coast Guard Sector San Juan Command Center received reports on May 3 about the 36-foot yacht taking on water. To expedite the rescue mission, watchstanders initiated an Automated Mutual Assistance Vessel Rescue System (AMVER) call, alerting vessels in the vicinity to the emergency. The Coast Guard, in collaboration with the Joint Rescue Coordination Center Sweden, identified the 'Desert Spring' as the most suitable vessel to assist. Equipped with the GPS coordinates provided by the emergency position indicating radio beacon, the 'Desert Spring' reached the distressed mariners around 6 p.m. The safe transfer of the sailors was executed flawlessly, and they were subsequently transported back to Sector San Juan by noon on May 5, all without any reported injuries. Following the successful rescue, the bulk carrier continued its journey from Owendo to Southwest Pass, with an estimated arrival date of May 9.
