Scandlines Ferries Grounded Amid Bomb Threat Investigation
On June 7, 2017, the German Scandlines ferry 'Schleswig Holstein' resumed operations at 3:30 PM, becoming the first vessel to return to service after a bomb threat prompted the ferry operator to halt all traffic between Germany, Denmark, and Sweden. During this incident, the ship was transporting no passengers or vehicles. Shortly after its departure, the 'Deutschland' arrived from Rødby, while in Gedser, the 'Berlin' also resumed its voyage. The routes between Puttgarden - Rødby and Rostock - Gedser were heavily impacted by the threat. In Puttgarden, the ferries 'Kronprins Frederik,' designated for hazardous goods, and 'Prins Richard' remained docked as they were unloaded and subsequently searched for explosives. Following a credible tip, Danish police conducted thorough clearance operations on the ferries in Rødby and Gedser to ensure public safety. Passengers disembarked from the ferries operating between Rødby and Puttgarden, as well as Gedser and Rostock, in a calm and orderly manner. By late afternoon, the 'Copenhagen' was held in Rostock, while the 'Deutschland' stayed docked in Rødby, as indicated by Lübeck police. The 'Prinsesse Benedikte' and 'Deutschland' were also unable to depart during this unsettling situation. To coordinate the response, the Travemünde water police established a steering committee, collaborating closely with their Danish counterparts. Traffic in Puttgarden faced significant disruptions, leading to the cancellation of all rail connections by evening. Long queues of cars and trucks formed at the ferry terminal, with alternative parking lots reaching full capacity.
Ferry Aids Stranded Yacht Off Fehmarn
On the night of October 17, the ferry "Deutschland" came to the rescue of a distressed yacht crew off the coast of Fehmarn. The 13-meter yacht, named "Sunte Mareiken", was en route from Eckernförde to Greifswald when it encountered water ingress near Puttgarden, leaving it adrift amid gusty winds measured at Force 7. In response to the emergency, the lifeboat "Emil Zimmermann" was swiftly deployed from the Puttgarden station, while the ferry "Deutschland" and the anti-pollution vessel "Scharhörn" made their way towards the yacht, which was located approximately 4 nautical miles from Puttgarden. The "Deutschland" deployed its fast rescue boat to facilitate the evacuation of the two crew members aboard the "Sunte Mareiken", while the "Scharhörn" stood by for safety. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of the fast rescue boat crew and the lifeboat "Emil Zimmermann", they effectively managed the flooding situation using efficient pumps. By around 6:30 a.m., the "Deutschland" was able to return to its usual operations, and the "Emil Zimmermann" successfully towed the stricken "Sunte Mareiken" back to Puttgarden.
