On June 5, 2025, at 7:48 a.m. WITA, the ferry 'Dharma Kartika II' found itself in a precarious situation when it collided with the barge 'Bomas Galante' while navigating out of the Banjarmasin Estuary towards Surabaya. The incident occurred at position 03°36.800' S 114°28.800' E. Captain Efendi Sutiono (ID No. 254), piloting the 'Dharma Kartika II', had communicated with the tugs 'MBP 3208' and 'Bomas Galante' to request a shift to the 2 West track, positioned approximately 36 meters from the adjacent AS track. Despite efforts to slow the vessel, the nearby 'MBP 3208' maintained a perilously close distance in the 1 West track (18 meters), causing its barge to drift into the 1 East track. In a bid to avert a collision, the captain skillfully navigated the ferry to the 3 East track, maneuvering at reduced speed on the port engine and half speed on the starboard engine. Unfortunately, at around 7:57 a.m. WITA, the bow of 'Dharma Kartika II' made contact with the eastern embankment, resulting in a ricochet towards the Bomas Galante barge, which was approximately 370 meters away from the 'MBP 3208'. With little room to respond, the captain attempted to halt and reverse the engines to lessen the impact, but a collision was ultimately unavoidable. Once the vessel cleared the barge, it proceeded to the OB Taboneo anchorage area, where it dropped anchor at 8:46 a.m. for inspection. The inspection revealed damage to the hull above the waterline, particularly in the bow visor region. Despite this minor damage, the vessel was assessed as seaworthy and permitted to continue its journey to Surabaya for necessary repairs.
