Barge DBS 9 Runs Aground Amid Severe Weather Conditions in Kuala Batu
On December 23, 2024, at approximately 8:35 p.m. WIB, the barge DBS 9, which was being towed by the tugboat Daya 10, encountered a critical situation as it ran aground in the waters off Kuala Batu, Susoh, at coordinates 03°43’429” N 096°47’895” E. Fortunately, there were no reports of pollution or detrimental environmental impacts. However, the cargo onboard, which consisted of a substantial 4,100 tons of iron ore and heavy machinery, including a loader vehicle, sustained considerable damage. Earlier in the day, at 4:38 p.m., the tug and barge were engaged in a Ship-to-Ship (STS) transfer operation with the vessel Dharma Lautan Ruby. However, by 6:00 p.m., the towing operations took a turn for the worse when the bow towing line from the Dharma Lautan Ruby snapped, followed closely by the spring line of the DBS 9. As conditions worsened, by 7:10 p.m., the Daya 10 and DBS 9 were positioned at the stern of the Dharma Lautan Ruby, seeking refuge from increasingly high waves and strong winds. Despite their efforts, the situation deteriorated with the second towing line breaking at 8:00 p.m., prompting the captain to attempt to stabilize the barge’s horizontal position. At 8:30 p.m., the towing line was re-established; however, it succumbed once again at 8:35 p.m. due to fierce waves and sustained winds. This ultimately led to the barge drifting and running aground about 0.7 nautical miles from Susoh port. The incident's primary cause appears to be the severe weather, with winds gusting from the south at speeds reaching 35 knots and waves measuring between 2 to 2.5 meters.
