Incident at Piraeus Port: Ferry Departs Without Engine Driver
On January 27, 2025, the Central Port Authority of Piraeus received an urgent report regarding a 51-year-old man found semi-conscious at gate E2 within the port. Responding swiftly, Port Authority personnel, along with an ambulance, arrived to assist the individual, promptly transporting him to University General Hospital Attiko for medical evaluation and care. Investigations subsequently revealed that this man was the engine driver of the ferry 'Dionisios Solomos', which had just departed on its scheduled route connecting Piraeus with several islands including Serifos, Sifnos, Kimolos, Folegandros, Sikinos, Ios, and Thira. Following the Master’s request and with approval from the Sifnos Port Authority, the ferry was permitted to continue its journey, in compliance with articles 88 and 89 of the Public Maritime Law Code. At the time of departure, the vessel had 84 passengers, as well as 17 trucks, 22 private cars, and three motorcycles on board. The Piraeus Port Authority has initiated a preliminary investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Following the incident, the Port Authority of Tzelepi promptly barred the ship from departing until a certificate verifying the maintenance of its classification was presented. Ultimately, the ferry was cleared to continue its voyage. Nonetheless, the Central Port Authority of Piraeus has initiated procedures to enforce the necessary administrative penalties related to this occurrence.
Six Students Injured in Escalator Accident on 'Dionisios Solomos'
On the afternoon of May 14, 2024, an incident occurred involving six students aboard the ferry 'Dionisios Solomos' during a school trip from Thira to Ios. The Port Authority of Ios received reports from teachers associated with the High School of Thira, who indicated that the students sustained injuries after a fall on the escalators as the vessel approached the Ios port. Notably, a 14-year-old boy was taken to the Ios Health Center for immediate care and was released the same day after receiving treatment. Following their excursion on Ios, the group of students continued their journey by boarding a different ship heading back to Thera. In response to the incident, the Port Authority of Ios has initiated a preliminary investigation to review the circumstances surrounding the accident.
