Bulk Carrier 'Don' Faces Heavy Fines for Water Pollution in Mersin
On January 10, 2023, the bulk carrier 'Don' was reported to have discharged contaminated oily waste into the waters of Mersin. The situation worsened the following day when it released tainted ballast water, prompting immediate action from local authorities. The Mersin environmental protection office quickly collected samples and recorded video evidence to document the incident. As a result, an investigation was launched and the local municipality's environmental pollution prevention department imposed a significant penalty of $536,500 due to violations of local regulations in compliance with MARPOL standards. Until the fine and associated cleaning costs were settled, the Harbour Master revoked the vessel's departure permission. Ultimately, the P&I Club intervened on behalf of the vessel's owners, facilitating payment and issuing a letter of guarantee. The 'Don' regained clearance and departed Mersin on January 13, setting a course for Trabzon with an estimated time of arrival on January 19.
