Missing Crew Member Rescued by Fisherman Near Newcastle
In a remarkable turn of events, a recreational fisherman, who also happens to be a doctor, located a crew member who had been missing for nearly 20 hours after falling overboard from the fishing vessel 'Double Delight.' The dramatic rescue occurred off Blacksmith Beach, located south of Newcastle, on November 8, shortly before 6:30 p.m. The young man, in his 20s, was reported missing after he went overboard on November 7 at 11:30 p.m. Authorities mobilized two Marine Rescue NSW vessels at the request of the Police Marine Area Command to conduct a thorough search off the coast of Redhead, approximately six kilometers from his eventual recovery site. After being found, he was promptly transported to John Hunter Hospital for medical attention, where he was monitored by medical professionals, including personnel from the Australian Border Force (ABF). At the time of his hospitalization, the missing crew member was in a serious but stable condition, suspected of suffering from hypothermia, although he remained conscious and alert during evaluation.
Intensive Search Operations for Overboard Crew Member from 'Double Delight'

The crew discovered that one member was missing during their routine check-in, prompting immediate concern as he had not reported for his duties. After conducting a thorough search of the ship, the crew deduced that he had fallen into the water. Last seen aboard the vessel around 11:30 p.m., the search efforts have been coordinated by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA). They enlisted the help of the Newcastle-based NSW Water Police and Marine Rescue NSW, alongside the Water Police vessel from Port Stephens. At noon, the rescue operations gained aerial support from the region's rescue helicopter, along with a specialized defense force chopper. The search operations were primarily focused approximately seven nautical miles off the coast near Redhead. Efforts continued tirelessly until nightfall, with the 'Double Delight' scheduled to arrive back at the Port of Newcastle around midnight.
