Hanseatic Eagle Faces Detention Over Alleged Environmental Breach in Chornomorsk

Feb 09, 2019 16:28

On February 5, 2019, the vessel 'Hanseatic Eagle' was detained at Chornomorsk by inspectors from the Crimean-Black Sea State Ecological Inspectorate due to suspicions of environmental pollution. The concerns were raised after an inspection by State Environmental Inspectorate representatives, alongside an ecologist from the State Enterprise Administration of Ukrainian Ports, took place on February 2 during cargo loading operations. During this inspection, water samples were gathered from the port waters adjacent to the vessel. On February 4, the environmental inspectorate, accompanied by an environmental expert, returned to the 'Hanseatic Eagle' to inform the vessel's master about alleged pollution found in the surrounding port area. The master refused to acknowledge the inspection findings, declined to sign necessary documents, and prohibited further investigation by the ecologists. Consequently, on February 5, a detention order citing Article 91 of the Merchant Shipping Code of Ukraine was issued to the vessel's master, port captain, and agent. Despite an imposed fine of 800 Ukrainian Hryvnia, neither the master nor the vessel's agent have settled the penalty. The 'Hanseatic Eagle' will remain detained until the fine is paid, at which point it will be allowed to leave the port.
