On December 26, 2023, an explosion onboard the 'East Wind II' triggered a fire incident at Mombasa Port, specifically in the vicinity of the Liwatoni area. Preliminary investigations suggest that the explosion stemmed from an electrical malfunction while the vessel was docked alongside a ship repair yard operated by African Marine General Engineering Company (AMGECO). The emergency was promptly addressed by the KPA harbour tug 'Simbha III', which possesses firefighting capabilities. Around 12:35 p.m., nearly an hour after the crew alerted the KPA control tower about the situation, the tug successfully contained the blaze. Fortunately, the rapid response of the tugboat crew and the shore fire brigade helped mitigate potential damage. One crew member sustaining a minor head injury during the event received immediate medical attention and was reported to be in stable condition. Prior to this incident, the 'East Wind II' had completed a fuel offloading operation in Zanzibar. The fire brigade remained on site to monitor the situation, ultimately departing at approximately 2:50 p.m. after ensuring that everything was safe and returned to normal.
