On December 15, 2019, the luxury superyacht 'Ecstasea' found itself in a precarious situation as it entered the Simpson Bay Lagoon in Sint Maarten. Battling fierce winds and strong currents, the vessel veered unexpectedly to starboard while navigating the Simpson Bay Bridge. At approximately 3 p.m., the superyacht collided with the control booth of the bridge during its opening. The impact was significant enough to tear off a large section of the booth, which subsequently plunged into the waters below. Fortunately, the bridge operator was able to leap from the control booth just moments before the collision, escaping unscathed. Despite the incident, the bridge’s control systems remained intact and fully functional, allowing ongoing operations without disruption. The 'Ecstasea' itself reportedly suffered minimal damage. Local port personnel are currently assessing the incident, and a detailed report is expected from the Coastguard and police to shed more light on the occurrence.
