Tanker Eko 2 Runs Aground Near Psara Islet
On January 16, 2018, the tanker Eko 2, which was transporting an undisclosed amount of oil products, ran aground off the northeastern coast of Psara, an islet situated northwest of Chios in the Aegean Sea. The vessel, manned by a crew of 17, was making its inaugural journey to Psara from Lesvos with the intention of replenishing the sole service station for liquid fuels on the island. Encountering strong south winds reaching 6 to 7 Beaufort, the tanker became stranded approximately 30 meters from the Spitalia area, stuck in a sandy section of the seabed. To alleviate the situation and ensure the fuel supply for the island's residents, the Coast Guard in Greece arranged for a tugboat from Chios to assist in refloating the vessel. Authorities remained vigilant, monitoring the situation closely for any potential oil leaks. Thankfully, there were no reported injuries among the crew. By the end of the day, efforts to pull the Eko 2 off the sandbar proved successful. For further details and photos of the incident, visit the original reports from Chios News and ERT.
